Research
Although I am not currently involved in any research projects, I have research experience in clinical investigation of eye diseases which typically affect the posterior segment of the eye, particularly diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
I have been involved in projects which investigate visual function in diabetic retinopathy and ocular hypertension using objective and subjective techniques, with an emphasis on visual electrophysiology. These investigations employed techniques such as the photopic negative response and S-cone electroretinogram (ERG), as well as more standard photopic and scotopic ERG and visual evoked potential techniques. Before commencing my current teaching role, I contributed to a project exploring structural changes in the optic nerve head in glaucoma using long wavelength (1050nm) laboratory optical coherence tomography.
Teaching
I was part of the team employed to develop the internal Preliminary Year at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences in 2013. I have taught a range of clinical, basic science and study skills topics throughout the undergraduate degree course. I currently lead two second year modules and have previously led modules in both the Preliminary and first years. I regularly supervise projects at UG and PGT level.
I was joint Year Lead and Course-Coordinator for the Preliminary Year between 2013 - 2017 and became Year 2 Lead in 2022.
I undertake a number of other roles related to teaching, including Personal Tutor, Learning Central Domain Administrator, Academic Lead for Student Voice and membership of the UG Teaching Management team.
I have been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since December 2016.
