Overview
Research Group
As Leader of the Disease Mechanisms Group, my research specialises in the mechanisms underlying cellular wound healing responses in oral (bone, oral mucosa, dental pulp, gingiva) and dermal (normal skin, chronic skin wounds, fibrotic skin) tissues during health and disease. By understanding these mechanisms, my Research Group develops novel cellular, biomaterial, pharmaceutical and other strategies to promote normal tissue repair and improved wound management in these patients. Such research activities include the translational development of a novel class of natural and semi-synthetic compounds, termed epoxy-tiglianes, for the treatment of non-healing chronic skin wounds and dermal scarring/fibrosis, with industrial and academic collaborators based in Australia.
I have successfully managed numerous projects in these research areas, supported by non-commercial and commercial funding sources worldwide (>£3.6M to date). These include the MRC, BBSRC, NHMRC (Australia), Wellcome Trust, Dunhill Medical Trust, Life Sciences Research Network Wales (Sêr Cymru), NISCHR, Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS2) East Wales, Malaysian Government, Iraqi Government; and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Government, in addition to industrial partners including Convatec Wound Care Ltd., Johnson and Johnson Wound Management Ltd. (now Systagenix Wound Management Ltd.), Peplin Inc. (now owned by LEO Pharma A/S), QBiotics Group, Phillips Research, Cultech Ltd. and Copner Biotech.
My research has culminated in numerous published peer-reviewed papers, filed patents with industrial and academic partners in the dermal wound healing sector; and many local, national and international conference prizes for staff and students under my supervision.
