Overview

As the only registered architect globally with a PhD in Accountancy, James Murray’s future-focused practice and research approach is in creating design value; establishing the link between architecture, environmental psychology and accounting for design decisions. With international experience designing security, educational, civic facilities, and an extensive track record designing and delivering hospitality & leisure environments, James’ approach reflects accountability in the investment and design of the built environment.

As a registered architect returning to university to complete a PhD (Accounting for Architecture) after 20 years’ experience in professional practice in the UK and USA, James’ research interest in ethical decision-making in architectural practice was generated by his interdisciplinary work experience. His interest in creating value has generated insight into behaviour, ethics, and the microeconomic accounting of architectural decisions.

James’ research has incorporated the first study globally generating primary empirical data on the cognitive processes and decision pathways of architects in design decisions when developing the built environment (in terms of cost, value, and worth). This interdisciplinary research delivers insights and theoretical contributions in the areas of Architecture, Accounting, Ethics, AI, Cybersecurity, HRM and Behavioural Economics.

Using advanced analytical techniques (Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling, or PLS-SEM), and indicator variables rooted in cognitive psychology, design methods and processes, and property valuation methodology, James’ innovative research approach has generated & analysed primary data on the complex inter-relationships between observed and latent variables influencing architectural design decisions in practice.

The research methodology and techniques utilised are future-focused, reflecting artificial intelligence (AI) frameworks by analysing Professions, Processes, and Technology, and reflecting an AI design perspective utilising Decision Trees, Statistical Data, and Graphical Communication to analyse research outcomes.

Interests & Experience

My research is concerned with creating value for organisations, practitioners, and the wider community. My interdisciplinary research network reflects the areas of Economics, Organisational Behaviour, Human Resource Management, Architecture, Accounting, Artificial Intelligence.

Drawing on 556 survey questionnaires (442 architectural, 114 accountancy), James’ research approach has illustrated that there are determinant indicators from the design process and property valuation process that influence decision-making positions on value, cost and worth. This highly individual strategy in architectural research is the largest research survey worldwide generating empirical data on cognitive processes driving design decisions, and is the first research survey worldwide generating empirical data on the cognitive processes of architects in determining for the value and worth of their architectural design decisions.

Research expertise includes:

-          Econometric Analysis.

-          Statistics and Data Analysis.

-          Advanced analytical techniques: Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) to analyse observed and latent variables, generating insight on perception and judgement.

-          Research Design and Methodology.

-          Collecting Qualitative and Quantitative Data.

I am interested in: Creating value with design, Accounting for design decisions, Built environment procurement and finance, Environmental Social Governance (ESG), Environmental psychology, AI support in decision-making, Biometric technology, Cybersecurity, and Ethical positioning.

2023

Human Resource Management Review. Volume 33, Issue 1. (March 2023)

An artificial intelligence algorithmic approach to ethical decision-making in human resource management processes.

Teaching

I am involved in teaching Professional Practice with a focus on ethics and creating value. My teaching aims to develop in students understanding of the drivers and outcomes of their decision-making, to not only allow development in their own design methodologies, but also to provide an understanding of ethical and philosophical challenges in creating the built environment.

Biography

James holds a PhD from the University of Hull (Accounting for Architecture). As a registered architect with membership of the ARB and RIBA, James has also been a member of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI) and Associate Member of the American Institute of Architects. Having run his own firm for over 20 years, his experience in designing sports facilities, retail, manufacturing, office, hospitality and security-focused facilities, and having designed projects as diverse as large factory facilities (incorporating Europe’s largest ring mill), through to modest conservation and Listed Building works, James has extensive design and organisational experience in delivering projects on time and on budget for value-focused clients, providing strong evidence-driven insights to students.
