Overview
Dr Caitriona Noonan is Reader in Media and Communication in the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC). She is an active researcher in the areas of television production, public service broadcasting, creative labour and cultural policy. She is co-author of the book Producing British Television Drama: Local Production in a Global Era (Palgrave, 2019). This book recentres questions of power, control and sustainability in the production of television drama. Her articles appear in journals such as the International Journal of Cultural Policy, Cultural Trends, and the European Journal of Cultural Studies. She co-edited a book on Cultural Work and Higher Education in 2013.
Caitriona was principal investigator on an AHRC-funded project 'Screen Agencies as Cultural Intermediaries: Negotiating and Shaping Cultural Policy for the Film and TV Industries within Small Nations'. This is a three-year project with Professor Ruth McElroy (University of South Wales) examined the strategies for economic and cultural sustainability adopted by publicly funded screen agencies. A book on this project 'European Screen Agencies: Cultural Intermediaries in the Film and Television Sector' will be published by Palgrave in 2024 as part of their European Film and Media series.
In 2015 she was part of a successful bid to the AHRC Research Networking Scheme. 'The Television from Small Nations' network ran from August 2015 until July 2016 and was a collaboration between Dr Noonan, Prof McElroy and Dr Anne Marit Waade (Aarhus University), together with industry partners: the European Broadcasting Union, Royal Television Society (Wales), S4C (Wales) and TG4 (Ireland). The network drew together TV professionals and academics from a range of disciplines to address the specific challenges and opportunities facing broadcasters and producers in small nations.
Caitriona's research findings and industry engagements have led her to make submissions to various government and non-government bodies (including DCMS, BBC, OFCOM, Welsh Assembly, etc). These submissions have been directly cited to inform recommendations and policies. A full list of these reports is available under the Engagement tab.
Caitriona has also researched the production of arts television both in the UK and overseas. To date she has interviewed senior executives and producers at the BBC, Channel 4, Sky Arts, ABC and RTE, along with independent producers and arts organizations. In 2017 Caitriona was a visiting research fellow at the School of Literature, Art and Media at the University of Sydney. Caitriona serves on the steering group of the Centre for the Study of Media and Culture in Small Nations. Between 2017 and 2021 she coordinated JOMEC's weekly research seminar series with her colleague Dr Maria Kyriakidou.
Caitriona serves on the AHRC's Peer Review College She is on the editorial board for the journal Critical Studies in Television.
Caitriona also welcomes PhD proposals and research collaborations in the areas of television studies including labour and production analysis, public service broadcasting, genres (such as drama and factual) and institutional histories. She is also interested in broader questions of creative labour, cultural policy and media provision in small nations including Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Denmark.

Dr Noonan is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
She has led a number of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level:
