Overview

I am a Reader in the School of Engineering and a member of the Urban Intelligence Research Group.
I specialise in Artificial Intelligence for Energy Systems (Energy-AI) with subsequent applications for the built and natural environment. I focus on developing intelligent computer systems to devise and enact "smartness" in buildings and cities.
I study the application of Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technology and integration with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Internet-of-Thinks (IoT) for the realisation of Generative Digital Twins. I also investigate the application of Quantum Computing for energy and construction case studies.
I have advanced experience in designing, implementing and deploying energy optimisation systems using machine learning and genetic algorithms with digital twins to achieve net-zero targets in real pilot developments such as buildings, rail, maritime and ports,  stadiums and sports facilities. I also conduct research in the field of local community energy systems by exploring the federation of energy networks and microgrids to support energy exchanges and monetisation of energy in sharing communities and economies. ‌‍In this field, I have recently published a book "BIM for Energy Efficiency" providing solutions for the decarbonisation of the built environment through informed decision-making using digital simulation and analysis. ‌
In these fields of study, I lead several strategic EU and UK research projects. I have authored 110 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. I also supervise postgraduate and doctoral research projects.

I am currently leading a strategic multi-energy systems project (LEOS), funded by Welsh Goverment, that explores the potential of power-to-gas systems to achieve net-zero carbon communities, leveraging a combination of renewable energy, storage and hydrogen technologies.
Recently, I have published a patent in the field of autonomous and semantic optimization approach for real-time performance management in a built environment. ‌

I am also the ICT lead of the Digital Twin Computational Urban Sustainability Platform (CUSP), www.cuspplatform.com and the CAIO of Optimise-AI, www.optimise-ai.com, a university spinoff currently trading in the UK and internationally.

Teaching

Currently, I am a module leader for the following modules:

EN4380/ENT680 -  AI/Big Data in Civil Engineering (Spring) -- digital technologies for Civil Engineering applications including  energy simulation, data mining, BIM and ontologies, multi-agent systems, neural network, genetic algorithms, optimization and Blockchain;

ENT725 - Research Methods (Fall/Spring) -- enabling the students to undertake and demonstrate a variety of research study skills and exercises relevant to an engineering research investigation;

Biography

I completed my PhD in Cybernetics and Statistics in 2012. As part of my PhD research, I have developed a distributed collaborative system for the construction industry to facilitate stakeholders access to sustainability knowledge and resources. After the completion of the PhD, I have worked as a research associate and research fellow on several instrumental research projects in the field of artificial intelligence for the natural and built environment including smart buildings and infrastructures, building information modelling, energy optimization, digital twinning.
