Overview

My main research interests focus on Welsh literature for children and young adults. This vast and significant body of literature has received very little academic scrutiny. Yet my research over the past decade has disclosed how these texts for young readers form a complex literary and pedagogic discourse involving language, ethnicity and gender. I am mainly interested in the dynamic relationship between children's literature and its cultural and social environment, especially in the context of linguistic marginalisation, and this is the focus of my latest monograh on constructions of the child and chilhood in 19th-century Welsh literature, Darllen y Dychymyg.

My work and research also contribute to current debates on contemporary Welsh children's literature. I was commissioned by the Welsh Books Council to produce a Review of Books for Children and Young People, and the report published in 2017 now informs their strategy in this area. Examples of the impact of the report include collaborative ventures to develop new children's authors and illustrators, an initiative to internationalise children and young people's reading experiences and the creation of new print and digital platforms to promote and review children's books.

As Deputy Head of the School of Welsh, I am responsible for issues relating to health and wellbeing, sustainability and green impact. I teach on the School's undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, and am Director of the MA in Welsh and Celtic Studies.

I lead the editorial team of Llên Cymru, the premier academic journal in the field of Welsh literature and criticism.
