Overview

I am a microbiologist with a keen interest in exploring bacterial ecology and interspecies interactions within microbial biofilms across various clinical and industrial environments. Increasingly, it is becoming evident that the majority of bacterial species in nature exist within mixed-species biofilms, shaped by a spectrum of social interactions ranging from cooperation to antagonism, not only among bacteria but also with members of other kingdoms. I believe that a deeper understanding of bacterial physiology, ecology, metabolic characteristics, and evolutionary traits necessitates a holistic consideration of their biological context.

I am interested in unraveling the prevalence and mechanisms underlying various social interactions within biofilms associated with many natural settings, including but not limited to, chronic skin wounds, implants, the oral cavity, and recurrent infections. Specifically, I aim to elucidate how these interactions influence bacterial responses to antibiotics or other compounds, such as novel natural polymers, and how they affect the evolution and dissemination of resistance and virulence. I aim to investigate the mechanisms and drivers (both chemical and biological) of species coexistence within the biofilm niche, including metabolic dependencies and the need for physical aggregation among diverse microorganisms. My goal is to develop innovative strategies aimed at disrupting biofilms or inhibiting their formation by targeting keystone species and modulating social interactions within these complex microbial communities. I am also interested in developing and utilising specific probiotics to target and manage undesirable microbial communities in clinical and industrial settings.

Research

I am currently focused on studying microbial interactions in mixed-species biofilms of clinical relevance, such as those found in infected and chronic wounds. I aim to explore the drivers of bacterial coexistence within these biofilms and their interdependencies, particularly in the context of tolerance and antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, I seek to develop strategies to target the social links pivotal for the coexistence of these communities.

Current research projects:

  • Wellcome Trust (2025-2027): Understanding interspecies interactions in mixed-species biofilms associated with chronic infections in relation to antimicrobial resistance (Principal Investigator)

Previous research projects:

  • European Commission (2021-2023) Understanding multispecies biofilms in the food industry is indispensable for controlling biofilm-related food safety and quality issues (Grant Holder; €178,320).
  • China Postdoctoral Science Foundation Grant Antifungal and antimycotoxigenic potential of lactic acid bacteria (Grant Holder; ¥50,000).

Teaching

I am involved in teaching and assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (BDS and MSc Implantology) with particular emphasis on Biofilms, Molecular Sciences, and Microbiology of Periodontal diseases.
