Dr Christopher Thomas
Lecturer and Director of Postgraduate Research Studies
Overview
I completed my degree in Chemistry with Industrial Experience in 2002 from Cardiff University before moving to the School of Pharmacy to undertake a PhD in transdermal delivery. Following this I completed a postdoctoral position in Cardiff University School of Medicine before being awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship in 2010 to study at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, TN. In 2013 I was awarded a NISHCR/Wellcome Trust fellowship before acting as co-investigator and Research Fellow on an MRC Research Award. I started my current position as Lecturer in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Nov 2016.

Research
Chris's research is focused on the role of oxidised lipids in health and disease. Recent advances in analytical techniques have significantly expanded the knowledge on lipids and they are no longer considered as merely cell membrane constituents. They can now be considered as bioactive mediators involved in a range of cellular and physiological processes from blood clotting and immune cell response to maintaining our skins barrier function.
Chris is currently focused on the role of these lipids in wound healing and skin disease, with particular interest in the crosstalk between skin cells and bacteria that make up the skins microbiome. In collaboration with other members of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chris is developing novel skin models using 3D printing to study skin disease and the immunological control of skin cancer progression.
Chris is currently the Deputy Director of Postgraduate Studies.
