Overview

I am the Head of the Division of Infection and Immunity at Cardiff University, School of Medicine. I am also the Chair of Paediatric Immunology and Infection leading the Inflammation theme within the Division. My research focuses on unravelling the molecular mechanisms behind the innate recognition of bacterial as well as viral pathogens. My particular focus is on pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and the innate immune sensing of the Toll-like receptors (TLRs), the NOD-like receptors (NLRs, inflammasomes) and the cGAS-STING pathway as well as their crosstalk with other immune pathways such as the complement system and how we can target them therapeutically for different inflammatory conditions.

Research

Over the past few years, the Triantafilou group has been focusing on unravelling the molecular mechanisms behind the innate recognition of bacterial as well as viral pathogens. In particular, we have focused on the involvement of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) such as the Toll-like receptors (TLRs), the NOD-like receptors (NLRs, inflammasomes) as well as the cGAS-STING pathway and their innate immune sensing as well as their crosstalk with other immune pathways such as the Complement system. For the past five years, I have been on secondment at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) as part of a unique industry-academia collaboration called the Elion & Black Immunology Catalyst Sabbatical Programme in order to perform medical research. Our latest work in pharmaceutical industry has been focusing on unravelling innate immune mechanisms for direct clinical value - translating discoveries into possible medicines. Our experience at GSK, has given us great insight into how the drug discovery programs work. During that time, we have been leading projects that focused on innate immune sensing of viruses, complement-inflammasome interactions as well as investigating how immunometabolism modulates the innate immune response, with a priority to translate the findings into medicines.
