Overview

Professor Katie Webb is an internationally recognised expert in the education of health professionals and associated research into the healthcare workforce. Professor Webb has worked academically within the field of health and work for 19 years. Her research background is in mental health and decision making, the academic field of her PhD (2014).

Professor Webb is the Senior Personal Tutor for the MBBCh programme and is passionate about supporting students through the life course of their studies, equipping students with the tools to fulfil their potential, manage transitions and getting the most out of their education and training. Professor Webb works very closely with the Disclosure Response Team and deliver sessions to students and staff raising awareness and understanding in identifying violence and abuse and being an empowered bystander where we can all play our part in creating a safe and inclusive spaces effecting change in culture. 

Professor Webb has worked across different Schools within Cardiff University, firstly as a researcher in the School of Psychology and School of Medicine before moving to the School of Social Sciences in Cardiff University for 5 years, before taking up a post as Lecturer in the School of Medicine after working on a range of health-related studies at Cardiff University.

Since 2019, Professor Webb has led the evaluation component for Cardiff Business School’s Diploma in NHS Planning.

In 2022 Professor Webb graduated from the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI; Cambridge, USA) Improvement Advisor (IA) Professional Development Programme as an Improvement Advisor (IA). By having advanced knowledge and skills to exceed in the art and science of improvement, employing a framework of practical skills and theory an Improvement Advisor is "devoted to helping identify, plan and execute improvement projects through an organisation, deliver successful results and spread change across the entire system" (Institute for Healthcare Improvement).

Professor Webb works at the boundaries of psychology and applied social science exploring and understanding stress management and behaviour change, and how education and research make a difference to clinicians’ workplace practice and the effect that might have on patient care.

Professor Webb's teaching portfolio includes research project coordination, research methods, educational theory and teaching approaches across Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies, as well as enhancing the education and training of practicing clinicians and allied health professionals.

Professor Webb with her colleague Julie Browne invented and developed CARDiph (www.cardiph.com ) a novel card game focusing on skills in educational planning and teaching for interprofessional healthcare educators. 

Professor Webb has led a number of high impact evaluations in the health-related education and training. In her current role she leads on research examining preparedness for practice, transitions, identity and evaluating the training and implementation of Quality Improvement in both Primary and Secondary Care.

Current projects include the evaluation of HEE’s SuppoRTT programme; Cardiff School of Medicine’s Longitudinal Clerkship (‘CARER’); a programme of work exploring the understanding, prevalence and management of Burnout in final year Medical Students, Foundation Trainees and Postgraduate trainers; and Health Education Improvement Wales’ Gender, Equity and Fairness in the Workplace.

In her work many of these areas directly link with issues such as patient safety.

Professor Webb has published extensively and presented widely both nationally and internationally.

Professor Webb has authored or co-authored over 50 peer reviewed publications on medical education, including a commissioned book by Wiley-Blackwell How to Succeed at Revalidation.

Professor Webb is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society member of the British Psychological Society.

Professor Webb supervises both Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.

Research

My research interests focus on medical education, mental health and wellbeing of health professionals, gender, identity, Quality Improvement and patient safety.

I employ a diverse range of methodological approaches using both quantitative and qualitative approaches along with participatory, visual, creative and narrative methods in my work with a range of health professionals, and those in undergraduate and postgraduate training.
