Ym mis Mehefin 2008, ymunodd â Phrifysgol Caerdydd fel Darlithydd ac yna cafodd ei ddyrchafu'n Uwch-ddarlithydd yn 2013, Darllenydd yn 2014, ac yn Athro yn 2015. Cyn iddo gael ei benodi yng Nghaerdydd, bu'n Gymrawd Ymchwil ym Mhrifysgol Manceinion rhwng 2006 a 2008.
Mae'r Athro Wu yn arbenigo ym meysydd Systemau Ynni Grid Smart ac Aml-Fector, sy'n cwmpasu isadeileddau ynni integredig. Mae'n cael ei gydnabod fel un o'r ymchwilwyr arloesol a gychwynnodd a sefydlodd feysydd ymchwil systemau aml-ynni a masnachu ynni rhwng cymheiriaid, sydd wedi dod i'r amlwg fel dau faes hanfodol o ymchwil ynni ledled y byd. Mae wedi cyfrannu at fwy na 60 Comisiwn Ewropeaidd, cynghorau ymchwil ac arloesi y DU, a phrosiectau a ariennir gan ddiwydiant naill ai fel Prif Ymchwilydd neu Gyd-ymchwilydd. Mae ei ymchwil wedi arwain at dros 300 o gyhoeddiadau a adolygwyd gan gymheiriaid, gan gynnwys 10 Papur Dyfyniad Uchel ESI Clarivate. Yn ogystal, mae wedi cyd-ysgrifennu nifer o lyfrau, gan gynnwys "Smart Grid: Technology and Applications" (2012, Wiley), "Smart Electricity Distribution Networks" (2017, CRC) a "The Future of Gas Networks" (2019, Springer).
Mae'n Llywydd Cangen y DU o Gymdeithas Electrodechnegol Tsieina, Golygydd Cysylltiol yn Bennaeth CSEE Journal of Power & Energy Systems, Dirprwy Brif Olygydd IET Energy Systems Integration, Cyfarwyddwr yr UNiLAB Rhyngwladol ar Synergeddau rhwng Rhwydweithiau Ynni, ac aelod ar y cyfan o Bwyllgor Technegol IEEE ar Niwtraliaeth Carbon, sy'n dangos ymhellach ei ymrwymiad i hyrwyddo ymchwil a hyrwyddo cydweithredu mewn ynni cynaliadwy a chyflawni Sero-Net.
Mae'r Athro Wu yn aelod o Weithgor Ynni yr Adran Diogelwch Ynni a Sero Ynni Sero Net sy'n rhoi cyngor arbenigol i'r Llywodraeth ar ddatblygu meini prawf sgrinio technegol (TSC) yn y sector ynni. Fe'i gwahoddwyd hefyd fel Tyst i gymryd rhan yn ymchwiliad Pwyllgor Gwyddoniaeth a Thechnoleg Tŷ'r Cyffredin i rôl hydrogen wrth gyflawni Sero Net.
