Biography
Croeso! I am Nawaf Alsubaie, a first-year PhD student in the School of Modern Languages at Cardiff University, UK. My research falls within the realm of studies aimed at "bridging the academia-industry gap" in translator training. It adopts a project management perspective on translation pedagogy, with a particular focus on the Saudi Arabian context. The rationale for this approach is that project management plays a crucial role in the functioning of the translation industry and is an essential competence that translators need to develop. My research specifically aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the pedagogical model of "Simulated Translation Bureaus" in enhancing students' perceived translation competence, based on the EMT competence framework. This will be complemented by gathering the perspectives of various stakeholders regarding the teaching and integration of this model into translator training in Saudi Arabia.
Prior to my PhD, I earned an MA in Arabic/English Translation from the University of Leeds, UK, and a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Bisha, Saudi Arabia, both achieved with Distinction. During the academic year 2021-2022, I served as a full-time Teaching Assistant in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Bisha. In this role, I contributed to teaching foundational modules in English language skills and English<>Arabic translation for BA students. Since early 2024, I have also worked as a freelance English<>Arabic translator, specialising in academic articles across various disciplines.
Beyond my current research, I have an interest in English language teaching, a field in which I successfully published an article titled "Attitudes of Saudi Non-English Major Students Towards Learning English", derived from my BA dissertation.
