Overview

I’m a PhD researcher investigating how British Muslims use Islamic spirituality—particularly dhikr (remembrance of God)—to manage chronic anxiety. My work explores how faith, identity, and culture influence lived experiences of mental health and coping.

With the aim of using qualitative interviews and thematic analysis, I hope to highlight diverse voices and promote more inclusive understandings of wellbeing. My research is grounded in co-production principles, valuing collaboration and community knowledge.

I welcome opportunities to collaborate with researchers, community organisations, and others interested in faith-based mental health, inclusive qualitative methods, or British Muslim experiences.

Understanding the Role of Dhikr as an Islamic Spirituality Practices in Coping with Chronic Anxiety among British Muslims - A Qualitative Study

Purpose and Summary:
This thesis will explore how British Muslim adults draw on Islamic spirituality practices—particularly dhikr—as part of their strategies for coping with chronic anxiety. Through in-depth qualitative interviews and thematic analysis, the research aims to examine how individuals define, experience, and make sense of these practices within the context of their everyday lives.

The study seeks to understand how cultural background, generation, and religious identity shape engagement with spiritual coping, and how these practices interact with perceptions of mental health, stigma, and formal support systems.

Anticipated Contribution:
The research aims to offer insights into the lived experience of mental health and faith among British Muslims, contribute to more culturally and spiritually responsive mental health support frameworks, and expand understanding of Islamic spirituality as a personal and communal resource. Emerging themes will highlight the nuanced ways in which dhikr may contributes to mental well-being.

Teaching

Teaching Background
I hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with over 10 years of teaching experience in a range of educational settings. My background includes delivering engaging and inclusive lessons across primary, secondary and post-16 phases, with a focus on topics that encourage critical thinking, self-awareness, and social responsibility.

Current Teaching and Tutoring
I currently work as a PhD Tutor with The Brilliant Club, a UK charity that mobilises the research community to support pupils who are less advantaged to access the most competitive universities and succeed when they get there. I design and deliver university-style tutorials for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 5 students, centred around my PhD specialism in mental health, coping, and lived experience. Through small-group teaching, I aim to support students to develop university-level academic skills and nurture their confidence, curiosity, and reflective thinking.
