Overview

Dr Muditha Abeysekera is a Lecturer in Energy Systems. His research interests are in the modelling, design, operation and the socio-economic effects of smart local multi-vector energy systems. He coordinates a team that develops decision support tools for the operation of public sector multi-energy systems in close collaborations with the UK Cabinet Office, University campus estates and the NHS. He is the theme lead for Energy and Whole Systems at the Net Zero Innovation Institute at Cardiff University (https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/net-zero-innovation-institute/research).

He received the B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Peradeniya-Sri Lanka(2010), the M.Sc. degree in Sustainable Energy Engineering from Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden (KTH- Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan-2012) and Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) – Barcelona, Spain, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Cardiff University, U.K. (2017).

Muditha acted as the Principal Investigator of an EPSRC project in collaboration with the UK Cabinet office to develop a decision support tool for the operation planning of public sector energy systems.

He is currently

  • the deputy head of the Energy Infrastructure theme WP2 in Supergen Energy Networks Hub that study interactions and interdependencies of multi-energy networks.
  • the deputy head of Cardiff's team for EnergyREV Plus project 'Next wave of smart local energy systems  that brings together 22 Universities across the UK to address challenges on smart local energy systems.
  • Co-I of UK-CHINA project MC2 that develops novel control and system architectures for urban energy systems employing digital twins  and  smart  interconnection  to improve system  performance  and  resilience.

His research has been recognised by national and international audiences including the Energy Systems Catapult.
