Overview

I joined the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA), Cardiff University, in 2022. I am an architect, academic and researcher specialising in the sustainable built environment, with a particular focus on indoor environmental quality (IEQ), user behaviour, housing, health and wellbeing. I have over 25 years of combined experience across architectural practice, academic leadership and interdisciplinary research.

My work is distinctive in its strong emphasis on community co-production and policy engagement, examining how cultural practices, domestic behaviours and lived experience influence building performance and health outcomes. My research addresses housing inequalities, particularly in relation to indoor environmental quality in vulnerable and ethnically diverse households. The relevance and impact of this work are reflected in my appointment as an Expert Advisor (External Advisory Group member) to the Welsh Government’s CCESRA subgroup for the Anti-racism Wales Action Plan, and through my advisory and collaborative work with organisations such as EYST Wales, housing associations, local authorities and health partners.

Alongside research, I play an active leadership role within the School. I am Architectural Technology Thread Lead and Senior Personal Tutor at WSA, contributing to the student learning experience through curriculum reform, staff development and strengthened student support systems. I am committed to research-led teaching and to integrating technology, design and social context in architectural education. My contributions to educational leadership and institutional service were recognised through the Outstanding Contribution Award, Cardiff University (2024).

Before joining Cardiff, I served as Associate Head of School for Teaching, Learning and Student Experience at the School of Art, Design and Architecture, Plymouth University, where I also led the Technology stream for the BA Architecture and MArch programmes and was Programme Leader for Architectural Technology and Environment. Earlier roles include Tutor in Architectural Technology at the University of Edinburgh and Associate Professor at MSRIT School of Architecture, Bangalore, India. Alongside academia, I directed an architectural practice delivering approximately 120 built projects.

I hold a PhD in Architecture from the University of Edinburgh (2014). My doctoral research was supported by a University Research Studentship and the Overseas Research Students Award, and I was awarded the David Willis Prize for outstanding performance among first-year PhD students.

Research Interest

My research interests lie in how homeowners' aspirations can inform sustainable strategies in architectural design. My research goes beyond measuring technical performance in the building and examines how the behaviour of buildings is qualified to represent this in the wider social and cultural contexts. More recently, I am working on the impact of culturally informed choices on the health and well-being of users in indoor spaces. I am examining the user behaviour and choices surrounding the way we use space and its impact on the indoor air quality and thermal comfort of ethnic minority households.
